WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY? HOW DOES IT WORK?
Hypnotherapy is a natural, gentle therapy which allows you to reach your unconscious mind through hypnosis in order to achieve your goals more easily, without your conscious mind being in the way.
As your unconscious mind becomes highly receptive and suggestible when it is calm and relaxed, hypnotherapy is extremely effective and fast working.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS THEN?
According to the Society of Psychological Hypnosis in the US, “hypnosis involves learning how to use your mind and thoughts in order to manage emotional distress, unpleasant physical symptoms or to help you change certain habits or behaviours”.
Hypnosis is actually a modified state of mind that naturally occurs to us every day, very similar to day dreaming or guided meditation. You are here and yet you are somewhere else. You are in a state of deep relaxation, while still aware. Hypnosis is the state right between waking and sleeping.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS NOT?
Hypnosis is not loss of consciousness: Hypnosis is not about making you lose consciousness; in other words, you cannot be hypnotised if, deep inside yourself, you do not want to, and no one can make you act against your will. Whether you believe it or not, a hypnotherapist is not a bizarre person with strange powers! In fact, a hypnotherapist will be able to work with you only if you want to, and you will hear his/her voice at all times.
Hypnosis is not dangerous: Hypnosis takes you deeper and deeper into relaxation, relaxes you more and more -and yes, everyone comes out of hypnosis!
Hypnosis is not magic: Even if it seems to be so sometimes, hypnosis is not magic.The effects do seem amazing and magical when compared to some other methods. However, no incredible miracle will take place: you will not become fluent in French in a week; you will not lose 20 kgs in 2 sessions.
And yet… It may well be that your sports results suddenly skyrocket, that you pass your exams with fantastic grades, that you quit smoking in a matter of a few sessions only, or that your skin condition disappears (see Studies - Ichthyosis).
HOW CAN HYPNOTHERAPY HELP?
Sometimes, some therapies will take many months or years of laborious work on oneself to offer a breakthrough, if ever. Through hypnotherapy -a gentle, safe and brief therapy working with the subconscious mind- results can appear nearly instantly or even miraculously, just in a matter of a few sessions.
Dr Milton Erickson, the father of modern hypnotherapy, stated that no therapy should last longer than 15 hours (see Session).
Your journey starts in your mind. Therefore, if you truly want to change your life, you must first be willing to change your mind. Hypnotherapy will help you to create new, powerful thoughts and behaviours.
Very soon, you will find that you are different, that you have more self-confidence, higher self-esteem and deeper self-love. At last, you will allow yourself to become who you want to become and create the life you want to create. It will be yours. Because your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by change.
WHICH CONDITIONS MAY RESPOND TO HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnotherapy is effective in many areas of day to day life: anger and frustration, anxiety, addictions, allergies, bed-wetting (enuresis), chronic dysfunctional pain syndrome, exams, fear (of flying / public speaking / heights…), grieving, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), insomnia, infertility, labour, nail biting, phobia (snakes, spiders, birds…), self-confidence, self-esteem and self-love, sports performance, stuttering, teeth grinding (bruxism), trauma, smoking, skin conditions (dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis…), weight loss…
In hospitals, deep relaxation and hypnotherapy help to: decrease stress and anxiety before and after an operation; alleviate fear of needles; reduce pain, nausea and vomiting; recover from anaesthesia; limit side effects of drugs (eg. chemotherapy) and other unpleasant treatments (eg. radiotherapy); heal faster after surgery…
